The Ambrose Estate has been quiet for too long.
Once, its invitations were coveted, its rooms glittered with candlelight and silk, and its name bright enough to soften scandal. But by winter of 1919, the grand estate had been too quiet for too long. The ballroom remains dark, rooms that were once flooded with life—too silent for comfort, and the servants move quietly through rooms built for voices that no longer came.
The Ambroses arrange one final lavish party to restore what's been lost.
Every guest is chosen. Every room is carefully prepared. Every door is watchful.
Eugene Ambrose is told only to remain polished, obedient, and useful.
At first, the evening is set to become a triumph. The estate warms. Its guests linger, and laughter returns like blood to a limb gone numb.
But beautiful evenings have appetites of their own and the Ambrose Estate has been starved for years.
